Uncertain. Unknown. Upended. Exhausted. Lose-Lose.

Planning for anything right now is so difficult. Strategizing for this future is so stressful.

This time of year, like most schools, the church is typically in full-on visioning mode. We take stock of the last programmatic year, listen to key stakeholders in different age groups, and pray for how God’s dream continues to unfold for us and through us.

The church was already immersed in a pretty strong spiritual migration and existential intersection, even before the surge of the coronavirus and call for defending black lives circles again around the globe—hitting really close to home with the horrifying death of George Floyd.

Our expression as Christians was already feeling disrupted before it felt like we had been dropped to the floor.

But, Christians in general and Lutherans in particular have arisen out of crisis. Out of the movement of God to be fully present with a spiraling humanity in Christ, and for God’s grace to reform us and guide us.

I’m thankful for the ways God continues to work through us at Trinity, responding to this threshold time with faith and trust, knowing that God’s love is always preparing us—not to fix the past or even change the future—to witness to Jesus in the present.

For such a time as this.

No matter what model of Faith Formation we continue in the Fall, what Sunday and Wednesday Learning involves for all ages, we lean into God’s grace and hope and love.

It’s not going to be perfect.

It’s not going to feel the same.

It will still feel uncertain and exhausting.

It will likely feel like a lose-lose for everyone.

But we do know that God promises to join us along the way—for the church, for our families, for schools, for rebuilding our community.

My hope is that we become more of who God has made us to be.

For such a time as this.

In Christ,

Pastor Peter
